Australia: Thousands protest vaccine mandate in Melbourne despite Omicron wave

Thousands of anti-vaccine mandate protesters marched through Melbourne on Saturday, despite a surge in the Omicron variant cases.

The crowd marched with flags of Australia and signs bearing messages such as, 'Stop poisoning our children or caricaturing Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews. Some chanted, 'Save our children' on megaphones while police officers escorted them.

 "It's just really cynical the fact that politicians are saying that people have a choice, but in reality, they're squeezing the livelihoods out of people without complying, so I think that's the bit that people find most challenging to comprehend," stated one protester.

Last week an average of 107,528 cases were reported per day in Australia, increasing by 573 percent from the median two weeks ago, according to the John Hopkins Institute.

Australia has recorded almost 1.2 million cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, with over 2,600 deaths.
